U.S. FDA To Ban Trans Fats from Food Supply

I was pleased to hear in the news today that the U.S. Food and Drug Administration is moving to ban trans fats from the food supply. Trans fats have long been linked to the dramatic rise in heart disease. That trans fats were ever allowed into our food is a travesty, and I wonder how many people have suffered because of this nutritional faux pas. I also wonder how long it will take Health Canada to make the same proclamation.
Still I must celebrate the initiative to ban trans fats knowing that it comes after years of research and lobbying by scientists, health practitioners, and consumers. I believe the U.S. government would not ban trans fats unless they thought that the majority of consumers were really concerned about the issue. So today I also celebrate that so many people are committed to making healthy food choices. From my nutritionist’s perspective, this is real progress.
